Odessa's Educational Forum: Addressing Challenges and Innovations

19 December 2024

The «Odessa Educational Forum» brought together city educators from preschool to higher education, along with representatives from government bodies.

Key issues requiring collective efforts to enhance the quality of educational services were discussed.

Due to the ongoing war, the number of students in Odessa schools has decreased; however, the workload for educators remains high, with salaries being insufficient. Currently, there are 474 vacant positions in educational institutions, particularly a shortage of teachers in natural sciences.

Additional responsibilities that are unpaid, including the management of "Resilience Points," negatively impact the prestige of the teaching profession.

The introduction of a municipal allowance of 3000 UAH has attracted young specialists, but the demand for such professionals remains high.

The average age of teachers in Odessa is 46 years. The quality of training for future teachers has also become a pressing issue due to rapidly changing curriculum requirements.

During the forum, Mayor Gennady Trukhanov tasked the head of the Department of Education, Olena Buynievych, to develop a system of municipal allowances for educators and technical staff.

The mayor also instructed to establish cooperation with the Institute of Physics at Odessa National University to utilize its resources during natural science lessons for high school students.

«Our priorities are clear today: army – education – medicine», – concluded Mayor Gennady Trukhanov.
