Students Connect with Polar Researchers Online

06 October 2025

Students from Lyceum No. 56 in Odesa participated in an online meeting with scientists from the Ukrainian Antarctic station «Akademik Vernadsky». This event provided a wonderful opportunity for children to learn more about science and life on the icy continent. According to the Odesa 56 Lyceum, high schoolers joined a Zoom meeting with participants from the 30th Ukrainian Antarctic expedition. Biologist Yelyzaveta Safonova, a native of Odesa, and her colleague Taras Peretiatko shared fascinating insights about the unique flora and fauna of the Argentine Islands, as well as the scientific research being conducted in Antarctica, emphasizing the critical issue of climate change in the region.
The students were particularly interested in the daily lives of the polar researchers. They learned about the living conditions at the station, the challenges faced by scientists every day, and the discoveries made during expeditions.
The meeting concluded with an engaging «Q&A session» that allowed students to receive detailed answers to their inquiries and feel proud of the Ukrainian scientists representing their country in one of the planet's most remote corners.
