New Educational Program for High School

30 May 2025

The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has introduced a new educational program for high school students. This document represents a significant step in educational reform.

The program allows students in grades 10-12 to choose their educational paths.

Choosing a Learning Profile. Students can decide which subjects and courses they would like to study within their chosen profile. For example, by selecting a mathematics profile, students will delve deeper into mathematics and related subjects.

Selecting Courses for Advanced Learning. Students can choose subjects that complement their profile and help develop their skills. For instance, a course in probability theory for the mathematics profile.

Choosing Elective Subjects. Students have the option to select courses outside of their profile for holistic development. For example, a student in the mathematics profile may choose a course in visual arts.

The curriculum also includes subjects that are mandatory for all students. All compulsory subjects for the state final certification after grade 12 (in the form of ZNO) will be studied over three years.

What else does the new educational program entail:

  • The ability to form variable groups for elective subjects.
  • Reduction of the number of mandatory subjects. Previously, 11th-grade students studied at least 14 subjects; now, in 12th grade, this number can be reduced to 5-8.
  • Schools can independently develop programs for non-profile subjects and courses.

Distribution of Hours for Various Educational Fields

The standard program includes educational plans for three clusters:

  • Literature
  • Humanities
  • STEM

Within these clusters, lyceums will be able to create various profiles.

Grade 10 — Adaptation Cycle (students can change their profile)

  • In the first semester of grade 10, the number of hours for mandatory subjects will be the same for all students. This will help bridge any educational gaps.
  • In the first semester, students will have hours for elective subjects.
  • In the second semester, the number of hours for profile subjects will increase.

Grades 11-12 — Profile Cycle

  • The curriculum includes a greater number of hours for studying the chosen profile and elective subjects.
  • Each year, the number of hours for elective subjects will increase, while the hours for mandatory subjects will decrease.
