Meta in Talks to Acquire PlayAI for Voice Technology Advancements
Meta is currently in discussions to potentially acquire PlayAI, a startup specializing in the development of innovative voice reproduction tools powered by artificial intelligence. Bloomberg reports this based on informed sources.
If the deal goes through, Meta will gain access to PlayAI's technologies and part of its team. Although the agreement has not been finalized yet, it could significantly enhance Meta's capabilities in voice functionalities for AI assistants and smart glasses.
Voice technology is one of Mark Zuckerberg's top priorities this year. Recently, Meta invested $14.3 billion in Scale AI and brought in the CEO of that company to help form a new team focused on superintelligence development. Additionally, Meta has recruited several researchers from OpenAI, Sesame AI, and Google.
PlayAI describes its solutions as providing natural interaction that is “as lively as a conversation between two people.” In 2024, the startup secured $21 million in funding from Kindred Ventures, Y Combinator, and 500 Global.
Moreover, Meta has also been in talks with Perplexity AI and considered acquiring Runway AI, but those negotiations did not lead to any agreements.
