In the heart of Odesa, Roman soldiers are set to stay for two days. Helmets, armor, weapons, and traditional costumes — all of this can be seen in person starting tomorrow. This is a fantastic opportunity to dive into the atmosphere of antiquity and learn about the lives of Roman warriors.
Journalists from Novyny.LIVE visited the site and witnessed the preparations taking place.
Outdoor Roman Camp
The Romans are setting up camp outdoors, minting coins, and demonstrating weaponry in the very center of Odesa. Starting today, a real Roman encampment is operational on Deribasivska Street, remaining for two days. Currently, preparations are in full swing: tents are being erected, armor is laid out, and costumes are being fitted. Tomorrow, everything will be fully operational for visitors.
"We planned to have our Roman camp open here, but the weather interfered. Tomorrow it will be fully operational. We know that Romans were present in the Odesa region, generally around the Black Sea. Therefore, we are recreating the history of Romans who were here," said organizer Anatoliy Provchenko.
Authentic Costumes
The work is meticulously planned, from locations to costumes, from fasteners to threads that have their historical legacy. However, even in such cases, not everything can be perfectly recreated. According to reconstruction participant Oleksandr, some items have "passports" that confirm their authenticity, including dating and archaeological sources.
"I am wearing a lorica segmentata, the armor of a Roman soldier. This is a Gladius sword — short, effective, designed for stabbing. My shield is a scutum. This is how the Roman army looked during the time of Christ," Oleksandr explains.
This Saturday and most of Sunday, everyone will have the chance to feel like part of the camp. Attendees will be informed about armor and weapons and even allowed to experience being a legionnaire.
Grand Reconstruction
The grand finale will be a large-scale Easter reconstruction that has been taking place for over 12 years. This year, it takes on a special significance — an invitation to reflect more deeply on events from two millennia ago. In the heart of modern Odesa, the world of antiquity will come alive, where every motion, costume, or replica is not just decoration but an attempt to tangibly experience the course of history.
"There will be a grand Easter reconstruction here. Imagine, Deribasivska will be filled with scenes. There are six large stages where various events will take place. It will all begin with the grand entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem on a live donkey," organizer Anatoliy shared.
Historical reconstruction is not just a spectacle; it is a true journey through time that allows residents and guests of Odesa not only to observe but also to personally touch the past, feel the rhythm of Roman legion life, immerse themselves in the atmosphere of antiquity, and rethink historical moments.
