Anniversary Exhibition of Gennady Harmider's Works
On March 1, 2025, the Odessa Museum of Western and Eastern Art hosted the opening of an exhibition celebrating the 80th anniversary of Gennady Harmider, a distinguished Ukrainian graphic artist and painter.
Gennady Harmider was a talented Ukrainian artist known for his oil paintings, etchings, and illustrations. His favorite genre was urban landscapes, and he also created still lifes and portraits, depicting both contemporaries and fictional characters. He illustrated over 200 books and created more than 20 ex-libris.
“We take pride in showcasing Gennady Harmider's works that reflect the uniqueness of Odessa. His art speaks not only of the city but also of its history and connections with other cities,” stated the director of the International Cooperation Department of the Odessa City Council.
At the exhibition opening, artists, journalists, and art critics shared their thoughts on Harmider's creative journey.
The exhibition features over 100 works created throughout his 50-year career.
Among the exhibits are etchings from series dedicated to Odessa, such as “Odessa in the Early 19th Century” and “Life in Odessa at the Turn of the 19th to 20th Century.”
A unique piece is a map of the historical center of Odessa, consisting of nine parts created using the etching technique. This work is one of the few that remains.
The series “My Ukraine” is marked by lyricism and warmth, depicting the nature and life of various regions of the country.
Harmider's paintings attract attention for their originality. The last major exhibition of his paintings took place in 2005, and now his works are again presented to the public.
This year, on February 21, Gennady Harmider would have celebrated his 80th birthday. He left a vast legacy, and his works are held in 27 museums across Ukraine.
The Odessa Museum of Western and Eastern Art is open daily except Wednesdays from 12:00 to 17:00.
